Do specialized subjects and different fields of private tutoring cost significantly more?

Besides general tutoring in subjects like Chinese, English, and Mathematics, there are currently various specialized private tutoring services available on the market, such as music instruments, French, Japanese, IB and tutoring for Diploma/Associate Degree students, many of which offer in-home services. However, due to the limited availability of high-quality tutors in these specialized fields, the cost of private tutoring tends to increase with the student's education level. For instance, tutoring fees for Secondary Six students are naturally higher than those for Secondary One students, just as learners at Grade 8 music level inevitably pay more than beginners. Therefore, tutoring fees rise in accordance with the specialization and complexity of the subject matter.

Tuition Fees Average for Last 14 Days of Successful Match

  • The above in-home tutoring fees are for reference only. Parents and tutors are not strictly required to adhere to these rates.
  • If there are other courses not mentioned above, parents and students can directly contact Tutor Circle to inquire private tutoring fees.
  • Should the private tutoring location be remote with limited transportation access, or if parents have additional requirements regarding the tutor's experience and qualifications, it is advisable to make reasonable adjustments to the tuition fees to attract suitable tutors.
Tutoring Should Start with Understanding the Child’s Personality
Tutor Circle founder Andy emphasizes that because one-on-one tutoring is highly personalized, it's crucial that the instructor's teaching methods suit the child's personality. "Tutoring is like a relationship; compatibility is crucial. We first deeply understand the child's personality before pairing them with the most suitable teacher. Some teachers have a stricter style, while others are more gentle and encouraging. We strive to find the best match based on the teacher's strengths and the parent's needs."
Teaching by Level is More Effective
Some parents with more than one child hope that the tutor can serve both children simultaneously. However, Andy reminds parents that if the age difference between the two children is too great, he does not recommend using the same tutor. "In fact, every child has different personalities. If the age gap is large, it is even more inappropriate to use the same tutor. This is because kindergarten tutors are very different from those in primary and secondary schools, each with their own unique characteristics. For example, kindergarten teachers are more adept at helping children manage their attention span. Furthermore, the needs of primary and secondary schools are different, and the teaching methods in primary and secondary schools are also different. Therefore, I recommend that one-on-one teaching is more effective."
If Cannot Keep Up in Certain Subjects, Choose Specialized Tutors
If a student is weak in certain subjects, Andy advises, "It's best not to choose the same teacher for all subjects. Instead, choose a specialized teacher to help the student gain a deeper understanding of the subject. This will improve learning efficiency and truly improve the student's weak subject." He shared a case study: a Primary 1 student, who used a specialized teacher approach, achieved top marks in English in the grade within just one semester.
